Deggans on CNN's Reliable Sources Sunday to talk new CBS This Morning and more
My next appearance on CNN's Reliable Sources comes Sunday, when I join media critic Howie Kurtz to talk about the revamp of the Tiffany Network's morning show into CBS This Morning.
If you've been reading this space, you already know my take: producers have created an interesting framework, but the show's three anchors still seem to be moving tentatively to take control of it.
It's an attempt to find a modern identity for CBS News' storied hard news legacy; an effort which runs right down to the name, which has already graced CBS' morning show from 1978 to 1999.
Top dog anchor Charlie Rose, saddled with a cold for much of the week, looks like he's having trouble getting used to the AM hours, and doesn't seem particularly comfortable with the truncated interview segments in morning television.
Gayle King is effectively bubbly and personable, but seem a bit out of her depth when the all tackle serious interviews at once. And holdover Erica Hill is an effective, if unremarkable bridge between Rose and King.
I expect we'll get to more topics than that, however. My segment is currently scheduled for about 11:30 a.m., but things can change on dime in cable TV.
