Don Imus steps in it again; racist falling off the wagon or a publicity stunt?
But then I wondered how all the Imus fans who defended his long and storied history of making off color, race-based jokes would explain away his latest misadventure.
Told that a notorious NFL player has been arrested six times in the past three years, Imus had one response:
"What color is he?"
"He’s African-American," says a sidekick.
"Well, there you go," Imus countered. "Now we know."
Imus has since said he was referring to the player being unfairly singled out, though the tone of the conversation was ridiculing the player for thinking he could change his name to avoid bad publicity over his past problems. According to the associated Press, Imus said today: "What people should be outraged about is that they arrest blacks for no reason. I mean, there's no reason to arrest this kid six times."
I'm just wondering if this is Imus attempt to get back in the news after months of toiling out of the national spotlight, earning ratings slightly worse than the show he replaced on WABC in New York. The Associated Press reports, you decide.
