Dr. Phil releases promo for Sept. 12 interview with Casey Anthony's parents
There was a time when Dr. Phil was on the ropes.
I remember back in 2009 writing about how the show was being moved from afternoon timeslots and losing fan support amid a plunge into tabloidy topics such Britney Spears' meltdown and the Octomom saga. Rumor was, producers were working hard to retool the show and figure out how to reengage their audience after seven years on air.
No more. Thanks to the departure from broadcast TV of his mentor and executive producer, Oprah Winfrey, Phil McGraw is free to bring his show to previously forbidden timeslots (he was banned from directly competing against Oprah in any market). And because TV executives are risk averse, they're happy to showcase a program associated with Winfrey in the timeslot where she used to be (in our market, another protege, Dr. Oz, replaces Oprah next month on her former local outlet, WFLA-Ch. 8)
Like few other talk hosts, McGraw is uniquely positioned to become the kind of daytime talk. So he's returning with a bang; interviewing Casey Anthony's parents, George and Cindy Anthony, about the murder trial which captivated the nation.
We still don't know whether or how the show fulfilled the Anthony's one monetary request -- a donation to a foundation named for Caylee Anthony, their 2-year-old granddaughter who lost her life under mysterious circumstances.
But their interview is sure to garner headlines and attention for Dr. Phil at a time when he can use the attention most.
