ESPN to pull Hank Williams Jr. theme from Tampa broadcast after singer compares president to Hitler
ESPN wouldn't go so far as to ban Hank Williams Jr. forever.
But after the singer's comments on Fox News comparing President Obama to Adolf Hitler, the sports channel has removed his opening song from its Monday Night Football telecast from Tampa tonight.
ESPN's statement: “While Hank Williams, Jr. is not an ESPN employee, we recognize that he is closely linked to our company through the open to Monday Night Football. We are extremely disappointed with his comments, and as a result we have decided to pull the open from tonight’s telecast.”
The remark came on the Fox and Friends show this morning, as Williams criticized GOP House Speaker John Boehner for playing golf with President Obama: ""That would be like Hitler playing golf with Netanyahu. Not hardly. In the shape this country is in?"
Some had called for Williams' theme to be dropped permanently from the show, but ESPN wasn't prepared to go that far. Executives are still evaluating the situation.
