Ex-WFLA medical editor Irene Maher joins the St. Pete Times
Continuing our streak of scooping up talented longtime journalists from other outlets, the St. Petersburg Times has hired Irene Maher, former medical editor at the Tampa NBC affiliate WFLA-Ch. 8, to contribute a column to the newspaper's weekly health page, Pulse.
Maher, who was laid off last year from WFLA after 23 years, will work for the Times part-time, also contributing material to the newspaper's Web site. During her time at WFLA, Maher worked on multiple news platforms, writing a column for WFLA's corporate sibling the Tampa Tribune and a blog for TBO.com, in addition to her TV work.
She also appears Fridays on Tampa PBS outlet WUSF-Ch. 16, hosting the station's TV version of its radio public affairs show Florida Matters. The Times has also featured work by laid off Tribune columnist Dan Ruth, displaced Creative Loafing writer Wade Tatangelo and former Tribune classical music critic Kurt Loft.
