Ex WTVT-Ch. 13 executive, removed after lewdness arrest, joins Tampa company planning to rebuild Haiti
Robert Linger, who lost his job as general manager at WTVT-Ch. 13 two years ago after a lewdness arrest in a Tampa adult video store, has resurfaced as the vice president of communications of a local company working on rebuilding Haiti.
The Tampa-based Haiti Recovery and Development Company announced Linger's appointment Tuesday, hailing his "wealth of experience in media relations." HRDC president Jim Lange was quoted in a press release saying "we are quite pleased Bob has volunteered his time and experience to our effort."
"Everybody at some point in their lives wants to make a difference," Linger said Thursday. "This was an opportunity to help te people of Haiti in a meaningful way."
Linger's job leading WTVT ended in 2008 when he was arrested on charges of lewd behavior and exposure of a sexual organ at the Fantasy Land Adult Video Store in Tampa. He was placed on leave after the arrest and eventually entered a misdemeanor diversion program allowing him to complete some requirements — usually community service, paying court costs and staying out of trouble — to have charges dropped.
A Fox spokesman said then that Linger would move to a new job as vice president of infrastructure for all of the 35 TV stations owned and operated by the company, working from a different office space in Tampa.
Linger left the company at the end of that year, starting Business Link Marketing in 2009. According to Lange's website the Haitian Renaissance, the HRDC is focused on building five new cities in Haiti with stand alone water treatment facilities and enterprise zones for manufacturing. He also plans to turn the company into a public trust for the Haitian people after 20 years, "to show the Haitian people I am there to help, not to plunder."
"Jim saw there are many people working to make a difference, but the one thing they are missing is a master plan," said Linger. "He went and created one."
Did he learn anything from his crisis at WTVT? "I'm reminded of this quote: 'No one can go back and make a brand new start, but anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending,'" he said. "I'm interested in making positive change for the people of Haiti, and that's what I'm focused on right now."
