Fox 13 presents new Friday show focused on high school sports
At a time when many local TV stations are taking hits for cutting back on sports coverage, Tampa Fox affiliate WTVT-Ch. 13 has announced a new half-hour show on Fridays focused on high school football.
Dubbed MyFoxPrep Football Friday, the show is hosted by WTVT sports director Chip Carter at 11:30 p.m. Fridays and will feature scores, highlights, a game of the week selected by viewers and pregame pep rally coverage. The show debuts Sept. 4.
High school football coverage remains an important franchise for local TV news departments, requiring a fair amount of staffing and effort to cover, but generating lots of loyalty among local fans who can't find the information on ESPN or other national outlets.
The St. Petersburg Times has an interesting prep football site, Friday Night Rewind, that uses lots of video and funky graphics to cover all 72 footballs teams in a four-county area. And Fox 13 has already offered coverage on its MyFoxPrep.com site.
As rival TV stations whittle away at their sports personnel, WTVT's move to showcase local sports may pay dividends -- offering the kind of coverage other stations may not have the personnel to duplicate.
