Game on: February sweeps ratings show new fight between WTVT-Ch. 13 and WFLA-Ch. 8 for top spot

tv.pngTampa NBC affiliate WFLA-Ch. 8 got some good news in February, scoring top ratings among key viewers at 6 a.m., 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. in a serious challenge to rival, Fox station WTVT-Ch. 13.

The turnaround is particularly important because owner Media General has moved so decisively in recent months to separate resources and staff between WFLA and sister outlet The Tampa Tribune newspaper. Officials promised TV staffers -- who had long complained that the extensive convergence with the newspaper was hurting their performance -- the broadcast arm would get its "swagger" back.

The ratings are also a nod to the growing strength of WFLA's morning show, which seems to be clicking over time with anchors Rod Carter, Gayle Guyardo, traffice anchor Leslee Lacey and forecaster Leigh Spann. But local news also won out at 7 a.m., as viewers aged 25 to 54 chose WTVT's local newscast over the national options offered by NBC, CBS and ABC (the retooled CBS This Morning placed fifth out of five, earning ratings at nearly 20 percent of WTVT's total.)

WFLA did get hurt by the loss of Oprah Winfrey; nine months after her departure from daytime television, the station's 4 p.m. broadcasts of Dr. Oz have dropped to third place among key viewers, behind WTVT's Judge Judy and WFTS-Ch. 28's Ellen. In prime time, WTVT edged out a win, likely on the strength of American Idol, which still has two Tampa Bay area residents among its top competitors.
