Glee, sitcom newbies, Mad Men and Dexter among most-nominated in Golden Globes TV awards

15

December

Glee-lynch-matthew Losers no longer, Fox TV's breakout hit Glee emerged as the top freshman in the list of Golden Globes' TV nominations -- a roster of hopefuls mixing new talent with old favorites like a fantasy Emmycast.

Certainly, the Globes have an edge; announced halfway through the TV season, they can react to new talent and hot shows quicker than the awards show ostensibly devoted to the task.

So we see the top castmembers from Glee -- including standout supporting actress Jane Lynch, with co-stars Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison -- singled out for top nominations alongside perennials Mad Men and House.

Other standout newbies: ER alum Juliana Margulies, who grounds CBS' The Good Wife; ABC's sidesplitting comedy Modern Family; Friends alum Courteney Cox, who amps up ABC's new comedy Cougar Town and Sopranos alum Edie Falco in Showtime's Nurse Jackie.

Two days after fueling the most-watched episode in Showtime's history, Dexter guest star John Lithgow snagged a nomination for his compelling work as the Trinity Killer on the pay cable channel's series about a serial killer of killers. The show also scored traditional nominations for best drama series and best actor in a drama (star Michael C. Hall).

The truest measure for a Globe nomination is industry cool. Which explains why HBO's Entourage got a best comedy series nomination, while CBS' more popular How I Met Your Mother did not. It also explains the snub of Monk's Tony Shalhoub, once a cool choice as a sharp performer on perfect vehicle for his talent, who saw the series end as a tired shadow just weeks ago.

Curb_enthusiasm_seinfeld What remains unexplained: How did they snub HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm, which engineered the coolest Seinfeld reunion possible on Larry Davids' show-within-a-show?

Other snubs: FX's Sons of Anarchy (thought for sure matriarch Katey Sagal might snag something), the Simpsons in its 20th year, Everybody Loves Raymond alum Patricia Heaton for ABC's new family comedy The Middle and Saturday Night Live alum Amy Poehler for Parks and Recreation.

But the biggest snub here I agree with wholeheartedly; no categories for reality TV, or related products. For most such shows, their names and quality don't belong in the same sentence, anyways.

That also may help explain why so few stars from broadcast shows appear here. even as The Middle, Glee, Cougar Town  and Modern Family fuel a minor resurgence in TV comedy, the Globes' voters remain stuck in the relative cool of cable TV-land -- also the place where movie stars are most likely to tread.

Still, these are minor omissions. And as I say every year, Emmy could learn a bit from what the Globes highlight -- a keen mix of new talent and old favorites which embodies the best the small screen has to offer.
