Happy 80th birthday, William Shatner!
There's only one man who could make a sorta hit out of the mess of bad punchlines and tangled storylines filling CBS' freshman comedy, $#*! My Dad Says. And its the same man who made a meal of David E. Kelley's legal pontifications on Boston Legal, just after building a showbiz legend as Captain of the most enduring science fiction franchise in entertainment history.
Happy 80th (!) birthday, Mr. William Shatner.
I had the awesome pleasure of viewing the Shat-man up close last July, watching him wrap a room of journalists around his little finger during a press conference for his CBS sitcom.
We all knew the show itself was, well, Shat-like. But there was no denying the charismatic power of its star, then touted as the youngest-looking 79-year-old in Hollywood.
He's always been an odd mix of contrasting impulses; a charismatic performer known mostly for hammy acting and stilted delivery. A gregarious guy who gets long milage out of poking fun at his own overblown legend -- while leaving you convinced that, on some level, he really does believe his own hype. (And he may have good reason -- here's the website for the Church of Shatnerology.)
