Happy Foursquare Day: Tampa-born celebration presents first global social media holiday today

Foursquareday-logo If Twitter makes you twitch and Facebook feels like the world's largest procrastination machine, you might want to take today off from social media; find a good book or cool Gilligan's Island marathon.

Because the rest of us are about to get busy.

Foursquare Day lands on this day, which just happens to be the 16th day of the fourth month (do the math, people). Dreamed up by a Tampa optometrist, it has grown into a worldwide phenomenon with events scheduled from Budhapest and Barcelona to San Diego, Portland and New York.

Participants use Foursquare, a phone application in which users check in to say where they are, from the gym to Starbucks or the dentist, allowing them to see instantly where their friends are hanging out. Check in at a place often enough and you become its mayor. Get enough nerds checking into one place, and a (hopefully) friendly competition begins; some cyber-savvy business even give cool stuff to frequent fliers.

Today, across the Tampa Bay area and in the other participating cities, Foursquare enthusiasts have gathered to build parties, puzzles and prizes around visiting participating businesses and "swarm" parties.

Locally, Extreme Tan and Smoothies, Bohemian Vintage and Mojo Books and Music are among the local businesses offering specials; the big party kicks off at 6 p.m. today at the Hyatt Regency in Tampa.

Time to get social. Unless you're really itching to watch another Gilligan rerun.
