Happy Mothers' Day: Marge Simpson and Walking Dead's Lori Grimes on list of best & worst TV moms

tv_moms.jpgAs Mother's Day looms Sunday, it occurred to me that TV now offers a new vision of what mothers and wives could be.

So to honor that innovation and the evolution which has followed, I wanted to list my Best and Worst Moms now on TV.

They're a far cry from the days of June Cleaver and Carol Brady:

THE BEST

Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) The Good Wife:
This mom kept her family together after a Eliot Spitzer-level cheating scandal by her politician husband, staying connected to her healthy teen kids despite a meddling mother-in-law, all-consuming new career and uncertain marital separation. They should just stitch an “S” on her chest and get it over with.

Gloria Delgado-Pritchett (Sofia Vergara) Modern Family: Yeah, she’s excitable and easily manipulated. But Gloria loves her mama’s boy of a son Manny, and his precocious genius is evidence she’s doing something right.

Marge Simpson (Julie Kavner) The Simpsons:
No matter how many times dimwitted husband Homer gets them kicked out of their Springfield hometown, she always brings just enough common sense and motherly love to save the day. Covering for a father’s boneheaded actions may be the TV wife’s biggest job.

THE WORST

Lori Grimes (Sarah Wayne Callies) The Walking Dead:
She pushed her husband and his best friend – who she once slept with – into a deadly confrontation and manages to lose track of her son repeatedly in a zombie apocalypse. It’s a tribute to Callies’ appeal that viewers don’t want to shoot her in the head.

Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos) The Killing: Linden is a homicide detective so obsessed with finding the killer of a young teen girl, she ignores her own teen son, leaving him alone in hotels for most of the day, knowing she’s being followed by shady characters. When child protective services showed up last week, viewers were rooting for them.

Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) Game of Thrones: This evil queen had a son by a romantic relationship with her brother, passed off as offspring of her husband the king. The boy grew so twisted, when his uncle sent over concubines for his birthday, the young man forced one to beat the other with a staff wrapped in barbed wire. Wonder what he’s getting her for Mother’s Day.
