Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert announce "competing" Washington D.C. rallies

rallyposters.jpgIt's two sides of the same satire coin.

Daily Show host Jon Stewart and Colbert Report host Stephen Colbert have announced "competing" rallies in Washington D.C. for Oct. 30, each based on their own unique way of skewering the bizarre media culture in which we are now steeped.

Stewart's Rally to Restore Sanity gathering is " looking for the people who think shouting is annoying, counterproductive, and terrible for your throat; who feel that the loudest voices shouldn't be the only ones that get heard; and who believe that the only time it's appropriate to draw a Hitler mustache on someone is when that person is actually Hitler. Or Charlie Chaplin in certain roles." Click here for more info.

While Colbert says his March to Keep Fear Alive was organized because "there are dark, optimistic forces trying to take away our Fear -- forces with salt and pepper hair and way more Emmys than they need. They want to replace our Fear with reason. But never forget -- "Reason" is just one letter away from "Treason." Coincidence? Reasonable people would say it is, but America can't afford to take that chance." Click here for more info.

According to ABC News: "On the official "Rally to Restore Sanity" page, 22,553 people said they were attending, as of this morning. The "March to Keep Fear Alive" page had 9,484 RSVPs."

I've always said there were distinct differences between Colbert fans and Stewart devotees, anyway. Colbert fans savor the playacting and irony that he levies in pretending to advocate silly right wing nonsense that he's actually lampooning. Stewart is a bit more straight up; his fake news anchor isn't really a character, just a new way of channeling his standup comic's attitude and ferocious intellect.

They may take different roads, but both guys usually get to the same sidesplitting place -- in this case, concluding that the anger some politicians and pundits are stoknig to serve their own agendas is cartoonish and damaging.

Check out the videos both media masters made last night about their rallies and face the toughest choice many of us may make this election season:
