Local radio star Cowhead gets Conan O'Brien to "apologize" for slamming Tampa over baseball win

conan-owlad640.jpgConan O'Brien admits it was a mistake made in anger and disappointment.

Having made the unfortunate choice to become a Boston Red Sox fan, O'Brien was understandably disappointed when the Tampa Bay Rays benefited from their historic disintegration to win the Wild Card playoff spot.

So the comic wrote this Twitter message: "Remember, Red Sox fans, they still have to live in Tampa."

Which caught a few people's attention in Tampa. I retweeted it to all my online peeps. And WHPT-FM afternoon drive host Mike "Cowhead" Calta got his fans involved too.

An explicit hashtag resulted -- #F--kCoco -- along with a campaign to harass, (I mean, remind) the TBS star into taking back his insult.

Calta posted tweets with the number for O'Brien's offices and the personal cellphone of the show's publicist, Drew Shane (the number Coco shows in the video clip below is fake).

Fans provided their own pithy commentary: "@ConanOBrien you don't deserve to be on the same network as my Saved By the Bell reruns!" "I'd plan to watch @ConanOBrien apologize on his show tonight but I have no idea what time or channel it's on." "@ConanOBrien don't be mad your Ginger complexion wont allow you to enjoy our beautiful beaches with out you bursting into flames."

The stunt drew about 1,000 calls; O'Brien sent this tweet of apology: "I want to apologize to all the people of Tampa for my last tweet. I’m sure Tampa is a fine place to live, if you’re a mosquito."

Does he know what the word apology means?

Watch it below:
