Local shock jock Bubba the Love Sponge Clem files for divorce
It's something his fans have known for some time, thanks to local shock jock Bubba the Love Sponge's tendency to talk about his personal life on the radio and in social media.
But Bubba Clem made his split with wife Heather Clem official on Friday, filing papers requesting a divorce less than five years after the two married at a star-studded event in St. Petersburg attended by Hulk Hogan and radio star Howard Stern.
The pettition, filed in Pinellas County Civil Court, said the marriage between Bubba Clem, 45, and 37-year-old Heather Clem is "irretrievably broken and should be dissolved."
The Clems separated in March, signing a settlement agreement developed with help from a mediator, according to this latest filing. Under the mediated settlement, the couple’s assets are to be divided according to a prenuptial agreement that pair signed in 2007 requiring no alimony and restoring the wife's name to Heather Dawn Cole.
Back then, news that the notoriously explicit on air personality was getting married merited a front-page story in the St. Petersburg Times, as friends and fans alike marveled at such a traditional move.
In the settlement, the couple also agreed “not to interfere with, annoy, molest or harass the other party or disparage the other party in public,” with special mention made of speaking “on air” about each other.
That's an important point, because Bubba Clem has built his success in radio on challenging rivals through his show and harshly criticizing opponents. But the shock jock has encouraged his fans through Twitter to avoid criticizing his departing spouse. During an interview last week on fellow shock jock Howard Stern’s satellite radio show, Bubba Clem declined to detail the reasons for their split, beyond noting that he worked a lot.
The pair married in January 2007 at First Baptist Church of St. Petersburg, in a relatively traditional wedding featuring wrestling star Terry “Hulk Hogan” Bollea as best man and Stern in the audience, along with former (Chicago) Tribune Co. CEO Randy Michaels and several members of Stern's on air crew.
The couple didn’t have children during their marriage, but Bubba Clem has a son, Tyler from a previous relationship and Heather Clem has a daughter, Julia, also from a previous relationship
