Maksim Chmerkovskiy drops Kirstie Alley on Dancing with the Stars
Spare us the inevitable weight jokes, please.
A close look at the video clips from Monday's Dancing with the Stars reveals dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy seemed to get a cramp at the worst moment during his routine with star Kirstie Alley, dropping the actress and hampering their routine.
It's the first time I've seen a pro lose it so obviously on the show, and it punctuated a night where previously troubled contestants such as Sugar Ray Leonard reached new highs, and favorites, like Karate Kid alum Ralph Macchio, struggled.
That Alley would earn a score of 21 after such an obvious mistake, however, continues to feed my suspicion that the judges are going easy on her because she's the biggest star in a cast seriously lacking in celebrity power.
She's also someone they've tried to get on the show for a long time; I wouldn't be surprised if they're giving her the kid gloves treatment for a reason.
Alley seemed to take it all in stride, both onstage and on her Twitter feed, where she posted: "Sort of a beauty in Live TV... Because it's live... Anything can happen... gotta love it!!!!"
Still, the surprise upsets are ultimately great news for a show which hasn't lost much ratings steam.
Keeping the audience engaged and guessing is Job One here, and few things galvanize an audience more than a dramatic, unexpected mishap.
