Marty Petty, publisher and executive vice president of the St. Petersburg Times, to leave the company this fall

19

August

Martypetty Marty Petty, the publisher and executive vice president of the St. Petersburg Times, announced today she would be leaving the company this fall.

"My departure comes down to a business decision," Petty wrote in a memo released to staff today, saying she would use September for a smooth transition. "Times Publishing is a smaller company today as a result of our sale of (Congressional Quarterly) and the current business climate and the size of our management team at all levels needs to reflect that reality."

Paul Tash, Times Publishing CEO, editor and chairman, also wrote in a memo to staff, "For the last nine years, Marty Petty has brought intelligence, energy and commitment to the St. Petersburg Times....One of Marty's accomplishments is the strong team of leaders on the business side of the company...While all the details are not clear, we will develop a new leadership structure around them, taking this opportunity to further streamline our organization."

From Marty Petty

I came to the Times 9 years ago this month fully committed to my chief responsibility; leading the changes it would take to win the entire Tampa Bay market and shaping a long-term plan in support of our prestigious journalism.

My work here is all but complete and while I'd like nothing more than to see it to its final conclusion, I plan to leave this fall. My departure comes down to a business decision. Times Publishing is a smaller company today as a result of our sale of CQ and the current business climate and the size of our management team at all levels needs to reflect that reality.

I'm most proud of the exceptional leaders we've assembled to carry the Times into the future and we'll use September for a smooth transition. As for my own next steps, we're officially empty-nesters and that makes many things possible. However, I came to Tampa Bay enthusiastic about its future and thinking about how I might make a difference will be invigorating.

I will miss the special people and mission that distinguish the Times and I lookforward to supporting both for many days to come.

Best, Marty

From Paul Tash:

Paul-tash For the last nine years, Marty Petty has brought intelligence, energy and commitment to the St. Petersburg Times. Her contributions helped make our organization better, and we will miss her as a colleague and a friend.

One of Marty’s  accomplishments  is  the  team  of strong leaders  on the business side of the  company, and they are ready to pick up more responsibilities. While all the details are not yet clear, we will develop a new leadership structure around them, taking this opportunity to further streamline our organization.

Marty will be with us for several more weeks to assure a graceful transition, giving us the chance to honor her work with us, and to wish her every success in the next chapter of her life.

Paul Tash
