May sweeps roundup: Fox 13 and Newschannel 8 still dominate, but ABC Action News shows improvement

Nielsen-lg A look at selected ratings for May's "sweeps" ratings period among local TV stations reveals a lot of the same stuff we've seen for several months now: Tampa Fox station WTVT-Ch. 13 dominates morning news time periods among viewers aged 25 to 54, the demographic prized by advertisers. NBC affiliate WFLA follows close behind, with CBS affiliate WTSP-Ch. 10 tops at the 11 p.m. late news in that demographic.

But percolating underneath the usual figures are some interesting trends.

Area ABC affiliate WFTS-Ch. 28 has seen improvement in many time periods from May 2009, doubling or nearly doubling its 25 to 54 ratings at 6 a.m., 5 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. Morning have become a bit more competitive overall, with WTSP nearly tripling an admittedly low 25 to 54 rating at 6 a.m. with its revamped morning newscast.

WFLA's Oprah edged WTVT's Judge Judy and WFTS' Ellen at 4 p.m., while the re-relaunched Tonight Show with old host Jay Leno on WFLA topped CBS' Late Show with David Letterman on WTSP.

In prime time, the impact of American Idol, CBS' popular dramas and Dancing with the Stars was apparent, as Fox topped the ratings, followed by CBS and ABC with NBC last among the four.

Here's the 25 to 54 ratings in key time periods during May sweeps, which ended Wednesday, provided by WTSP (ratings are the percentage of homes in the market with TVs tuned to a particular channel):
