Meteorologist Chris Suchan leaves WTSP-Ch. 10 Friday for KCTV in Kansas City

chris-suchan.jpgChanges in the weather team at WTSP-Ch. 10 continue as forecaster Chris Suchan leaves the St. Petersburg CBS affiliate Friday for a job as chief meteorologist at KCTV in Kansas City.

Suchan, 36, said the opportunity in Kansas City came up as WTSP officials were considering a new weather chief after the January departure of Tammie Souza. But he doesn't completely discount the notion that not being offered the chief's job in St. Petersburg made it easier to accept a similar job in a smaller market (Tampa Bay is the nation's 14th largest TV market; Kansas City ranks 31st).

"You should never be surprised by anything," said Suchan, who came to WTSP in late August 2008, as meteorologists Anna Allen, Randy Rauch and Stephanie Roberts left the station. "They offered me a package which was more than fair (to stay). But the end game in these jobs is for you to become chief; I feel like I made it."

WTSP still has months before its weather team will be complete; mostly because the station's new chief meteorologist, Jim Van Fleet, can't appear until his contract with Orlando Fox affiliate WOFL ends in late November or his station finds a replacement. Right now, his start date is scheduled around Dec. 1.

St. Petersburg native Mark Collins and West Palm Beach-based Kate Wentzel joined the weather department last month, nearly completing a forecaster shuffle which also saw Sherry Ray Hughes leave in September to join her husband in Ohio.

Suchan's last broadcast is expected at 11 p.m. Friday; he starts in Kansas City about two weeks later.
