Nielsen: Just 3 of the most popular shows in '08 were scripted

12

December

Mentalistbaker It's tempting to draw a lot of conclusions from the just-released list of Top 10 TV shows, movies, Internet sites and more developed by the current king of audience counting, Nielsen Media Research.

There are, for example, just three scripted shows among the Top 10 TV series and Top 10 TV episodes, combined (CBS's freshman drama, The Mentalist, at left, is one). All three series are on the most traditional TV network, CBS. But look at the most time-shifted series -- those shows people get their VCRs and DVRs to record for later viewing -- and that's where all the other networks show up, NBC's foundering sci-fi adventure drama Heroes topping the list.

This probably means that younger viewers are using technology to spread their viewing around and watch shows when they have time, if they have time. More traditional viewers are sitting down when the show airs for more traditional fare. And where the two come together -- on unscripted "reality TV" successes such as Dancing With the Stars and American Idol -- a mass hit emerges.

It also means that NBC's move to give Jay Leno one-third its weekday prime time may not be so crazy after all -- provided they find a way to make viewers watch a prime time variety show that doesn't have judges or call-in voting.

Here's the list, just released by Nielsen.
