NPR schedules Audie Cornish to fill in for Michele Norris as All Things Considered host in 2012

newcornish.jpgNational Public Radio has tapped Weekend Edition Sunday host Audie Cornish (pictured, right) to fill in for host Michele Norris on the afternoon newscast All Things Considered.

Cornish, who only began hosting NPR's Sunday morning newscast this fall, will take over Norris' co-anchor spot in January 2012, serving through the election and past the presidential inauguration in 2013.

Norris announced last week she would leave her anchor duties until after the election, once her husband had been hired as a senior advisor for President Barack Obama's re-election campaign.

NPR's acting senior vice president of news Margaret Low Smith said in an email to staff: “While it was a tough decision to move Audie (albeit temporarily) from a program she has quickly made her own, her skills and experience make her the ideal person to step in. She is a warm and familiar voice to NPR audiences and an outstanding journalist and storyteller. Audie will be a wonderful compliment to Robert [Siegel] and Melissa [Block]. And, in an Election year, her experience covering Capitol Hill and the 2008 presidential election will be a huge plus.”

(Full disclosure: I write commentaries for NPR regularly on television as a freelance contributor.)

norris-m.jpgMoving Cornish, who is African American, also maintains the ethnic diversity of NPR's afternoon show just a few weeks after a founding member of the National Association of Black Journalists sent an open letter to the outlet's new CEO contending the organization still has a large "diversity problem."

Norris (left) came to NPR in 2002 after nearly ten years as a correspondent for ABC News, making history as the first black woman to host a weekday news program at NPR.

According to NPR, Guy Raz will co-host the show for the month of November. Lynn Neary will be part of the December lineup.

NPR is seaching internally for a host to fill in for Cornish on Sundays.
