Oprah's bad luck continues; mea culpa on CBS comes while everyone's watching NBC and ABC
Will Oprah Winfrey ever catch a break again?
The onetime Queen of All Media went on CBS This Morning today to deliver a massive mea culpa about her cable channel, OWN.
News has been tough lately. The cable channel has dismal ratings, just canceled Rosie O'Donnell's highly-hyped talk show, just laid off 30 people and saw a respected media analyst predict a $142 million loss so far. The Los Angeles Times had a good story chronicling all the heartbreak.
Time for damage control, so she did something her pal Gayle King predicted would not happen for many more months -- she joined Gayle and co-host Charlie Rose on CBS This Morning.
Unfortunately, she picked the day Katie Couric decided to return to morning television for a week on the competition, ABC's Good Morning America. The Today show, scrambling to keep its head in the game, brought back departed host Meredith Vieira and announced Sarah Palin would be guest hosting Tuesday.
Winfey did say some interesting stuff, noting, "had I known it would be this difficult. I might have done something else....If I were to write a book about it, I would have called it 101 mistakes."
First mistake with OWN, debuting the channel too soon, before she was ready to focus on it, while shutting down her legendary daytime talk show in the first half of last year. "It’s like having the wedding when you know you’re not ready."
She also mentioned sitting with Saturday Night Live mastermind Lorne Michaels, who told her nobody would want to see her succeed. and the headline which knocked her on her heels recently came from USA Today: Oprah Not Quite Standing on Her OWN.
Too bad nobody saw her do it. Maybe she should come back next week.
