john-legend.jpgThe Tampa Bay isn't necessarily the first place which comes to mind when you think of celebrity-studded fund-raising oppotunities.

But the United Way of Tampa Bay seems ready to change that trend with a powerful booking -- snagging R&B star John Legend to perform Dec. 13 at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg, offering a solo performance aimed at raising funds for their education programs in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties.

The show features Legend performing “unplugged” fashion alone with a piano for about 75 minutes, sharing stories about his life and the importance of education. The singer has been a longtime advocate for education reform, establishing his own education-focused non profit organization, The Show Me Campaign, and partnering with Samsung Corp. to give out $1-million in technology grants to innovative education programs.

john-legend-cause.jpgTickets will cost $55, $70 and $85, set to go on sale Sept. 24 through TicketMaster and the Mahaffey Theater’s box office. Valpak.com is onboard as the show's presenting sponsor.

“We are thrilled to have John Legend come to our community and join us in celebrating education,” said Diana Baker, CEO of United Way of Tampa Bay, in a press release about the event. “We know that John will touch many hearts with his music and his commitment to kids everywhere.”

Legend, born John Roger Stephens, is a multi-platinum selling artist who has won nine Grammy awards since bursting on the scene with his debut album, Get Lifted in 2004. He’s also known as a prolific collaborator, working with Kanye West, Alicia Keys and The Roots, providing his song Shine for use in the critically-acclaimed documentary on education reform, Waiting for Superman.
