Reelz Channel lands on Bright House Networks, giving most Tampa Bay cable viewers access to The Kennedys

thekennedys1.jpgWhen I called one cable company official to ask about Reelz Channel -- the obscure, movie centered cable channel which bought rights to air the controversial miniseries The Kennedys -- the guy hadn't even heard of the platform, which airs shows featuring noted film critics such as Leonard Maltin and Richard Roeper.

Now the channel is triumphantly announcing a deal with Bright House Networks to bring the channel to systems in five states, including Florida. Since Bright House's main competitior locally, Verizon Fios, already carries Reelz, this means most Tampa Bay area TV viewers will now be able to see The Kennedys, which debuts Sunday.

Noted Hollywood conservative and Kennedys executive producer Joel Surnow has often accused the miniseries' original patron, the History channel, of bowing to political pressure when they passed on airing the program, which sometimes paints a less-than-flattering portrait of the storied family. But critics have since suggested the real reason the channel might have pronounced the miniseries "not a fit for the History brand," because it's not that good.

kennedy-smears.jpgRegardless, Reelz likely has used the miniseries as a wedge to gain extra clearances for their channel on cable systems, in the same way Turner Broadcasting used the NCAA tournament to spread carriage of its truTV and truTV HD channels (Bright House picked up truTV HD right before the tournament broadcasts began).

Looks like Tampa Bay audiences can decide for themselves whether Reelz spent its money wisely.
