St. Pete Times and Politico team up for Tampa GOP convention coverage
The St. Pete Times will team with the political news website and newspaper Politico to cover events leading to and including the 2012 GOP convention in Tampa.
The partnership highlights how news outlets which once may have considered each other competitors now work together to offer more comprehensive coverage than either outlet could provide alone.
The Times and Politico will begin sharing stories immediately, which the newspaper's front page co-branded with Politico's logo during the convention. The two organizations are expected to work together in hosting newsmaker events and each outlet's website will also be co-branded during the convention, scheduled to begin in August 2012.
And the Times' fact-checking website PolitiFact will also provide fact-checking of candidates' speeches for both companies.
Both outlets cited previous partnerships as an inspiration for the new arrangement; Politico worked with newspapers in Denver and Minneapolis-St. Paul during the 2008 election cycle, while the Times has maintained a successful partnership with the Miami Herald in Tallahassee, covering news in the state's capital from a joint bureau.
Given the expected pitched competition between the Times and Tampa Tribune to own coverage of the GOP convention in Tampa, this partnership is an interesting development.
