Talking Oprah's unfortunate Nielsen tweet on the Tom Joyner Morning Show
The good news is that I got to have fun this morning with Roland Martin and the crew at the Tom Joyner Morning Show, talking about Oprah Winfrey's unfortunate tweet asking Nielsen families to watch her show on Sunday.
The bad news: Tom had a few criticisms for Oprah as a CEO that I hope the Queen of All Media doesn't hold against me. (You know we were just kidding, right Ms. Winfrey? Right?)
Actually, we had a great time poking fun at Oprah's mistake. The company which tabulates TV ratings, The Nielsen Company, is very focused on keeping programmers from unfairly affecting their ratings.
Nielsen will throw out ratings from any show they feel has benefited from undue influence -- so far, it doesn't look like they'll go that far with Oprah -- and families who are part of their viewership sample are supposed to keep it a secret (that's the answer to Roland's question about why you never hear about black Nielsen families)
Here in the Tampa Bay area, stations sometimes hold sweepstakes or giveways targeted to raise awareness in certain zip codes where they know Nielsen families reside. But they are not supposed to directly influence individual people in the sample; hence, Oprah's problem.
We went on to talk about why Oprah's cable channel OWN may be struggling.
