Tampa Bay Times gains circulation, Tampa Tribune posts losses in new figures released today

newspaperhawkerimage.jpgFour months after a historic name change, the The Tampa Bay Times has posted small gains in circulation compared to the same time period in 2011, widening its lead with local rival the Tampa Tribune.

The Times' new Sunday circulation of 432,202 was a 1 percent rise from 2011, while its daily circulation of 299,497 was a 2 percent rise; all current circulation figures are averaged over a six-month period reaching back from March 31. The daily figure also includes an average of more than 40,000 "branded editions"; in the Times' case, that means copies of the free tabloid TBT which are similarly branded and bring additional ad revenue.

Rival Tampa Tribune, in contrast, saw daily circulation dip 12 percent to 144,510 and Sunday circulation hold steady at 262,369.

In fact, outside of the Orlando Sentinel's small rise in Sunday circulation, the Times seems to be the only major Florida newspaper to see gains, however slight, in both circulation categories.

The total average circulation figures also include digital editions, which provided a 73 percent boost for the New York Times, where its digital subscribers now outnumber its print subscribers.

The Tampa Bay Times now ranks 17th among Sunday editions and 18th in daily subscriptions nationwide; overall, Sunday circulation for newspapers rose 5 percent, daily circulation rose .68 percent.
