Tampa Fox station WTVT-Ch. 13 gets new news V.P. two months after getting a new general manager

wtvt-logo.jpgTwo months after WTVT-Ch. 13 general manager Bill Schneider left for Atlanta, the Tampa Fox station's vice president of news is going to join him.

Mike McClain, who has led news operations at WTVT since 2007, is going to Atlanta to fill the same job at Fox-owned WAGA-TV, where Schneider now serves as general manager.

In his place, Fox appointed John Hoffman, a 23-year WTVT veteran  who has worked as assistant news director for 11 years. Effective today, he takes over as news director in an abrupt change that even surprised some station staffers.

Hoffman's move is the second time a WTVT veteran has moved up; Schneider's replacement was Jeff Maloney, the station's former head of sales and a seven-year veteran.

Below is Fox's press release on the executive change:

TAMPA – John Hoffman has been named Vice President and News Director of WTVT FOX 13 in Tampa, announced Jeff Maloney, the station’s Vice President and General Manager.  Effective Thursday, October 14th, 2010, John will oversee all editorial, business and administrative functions of the news department for WTVT FOX 13, reporting directly to Maloney.

In making the announcement, Maloney stated, “John has been a key element in the ongoing success of FOX13 News in Tampa Bay. I have every confidence that his passion and commitment to the Tampa Bay community will continue to engage and inform viewers in the market. I am thrilled to announce John’s appointment to Vice President and News Director of our station.”

Previously, Hoffman spent 23 years with WTVT-TV, the FOX-owned station in Tampa. He started there as a Producer in 1987 and was later promoted to Senior Producer and Managing Editor. Most recently, Hoffman served as the station’s Assistant News Director, a position he held for 11 years.

Added Hoffman, “It’s a great honor to have served the viewers of the Tampa Bay Area for the past 25 years and it’s an even greater honor to now lead the news organization to which I have dedicated much of my professional career. I look forward to meeting and exceeding the ever changing needs of the Tampa Bay Area.”

A graduate of the University of the South Florida, Hoffman holds a Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Journalism.

WTVT FOX 13 is part of the FOX Television Stations, one of the nation's largest owned-and-operated network broadcast groups, comprising 27 stations in 18 markets and covering nearly 37.21 percent of U.S. television homes.  This includes six duopolies in the top 10 markets: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Washington, D.C. and Houston; as well as duopolies in Minneapolis, Phoenix and Orlando.
