Tampa high school student to be featured Tuesday on MTV series Made

MTV_Made.jpgThis is something that came into the office just today, but it appears a student from a Tampa charter school is going to appear on the MTV series Made -- in which young viewers ask for the show's helping in making themselves over into something they've always dreamed of being.

In the case of Angel Hernandez, a junior at Brooks-DeBartolo Collegiate High School, that means being transformed into a baseball player -- something with particular resonance, given the rising fortunes of the Tampa Bay Rays.

Below is a copy of the press release the school sent out, along with a clip of Hernandez horsing around during the show's taping. the actual episode airs at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

TAMPA, FL, October 11, 2010 - P. "Angel" Hernandez, a junior at Brooks-DeBartolo Collegiate High School (BDCHS), will be featured on MTV's "MADE" on October 12, 2010 at 4 p.m.  Hernandez was chosen by MTV to appear on the show.  He will be "MADE" into something he felt he could never accomplish before: a baseball player.

"This is very exciting for Angel and for our school. We take great pride in the accomplishments of our students, whether they are academic, athletic, or other important areas of their lives." said Dr. Phildra Swagger, Executive Director and Principal of Brooks-DeBartolo Collegiate High School. "We have enjoyed supporting Angel as an extremely talented musician and we look forward to doing the same in his new athletic endeavor."

"MADE" is a self-improvement reality television series, broadcast on MTV, which follows teens who have a goal and want to be "made" into something they never dreamed possible. The participant is given a coach who is an expert in their chosen field, who helps them attain their goals over the course of several weeks. Angel wants to be made into a baseball player because he feels many of the people around him are athletic but he doesn't have the athleticism to hit or catch the ball.

Brooks-DeBartolo is a privately operated public charter school with approval from the School District of Hillsborough County.  It is founded on the belief that, given the necessary resources and opportunities, every student has the potential to realize their dreams. The BDCHS varsity Baseball team that has seen three players drafted by the MLB in the last two years, with others garnering scholarships to college.

BDCHS is hosting a watch party on October 12, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. which is open to all students, parents, faculty, and community members at no charge. Refreshments including hot dogs, potato chips, and other snacks will be available for purchase.
