Telephones out for a while at WUSF TV and Radio as station copes with power surge
(UPDATE: An official there now says telephone lines have been repaired, one day before WUSF-FM was to start a fundraising drive. The radio stations WUSF-FM and WSMR-FM were knocked off air briefly by the 11:30 a.m. power surge, which also knocked TV station WUSF-Ch. 16 off air for nearly an hour.)
Telephone lines at WUSF Public Media are still damaged following a power spike earlier today which knocked the TV station off the air for 48 minutes.
General manager JoAnn Urofsky acknowledged the problem in an email to the St. Petersburg Times, saying online communication was the best way to reach people at WUSF-Ch. 16 or WUSF-FM (89.7) until the problems are repaired. The TV and radio stations are now on the air.
"We had a power spike that was long enough to toast some of our equipment," she wrote in an email to the St. Petersburg Times.
"It knocked WUSF TV off the air for 48 minutes and has damaged our phone system," she added. "Phones are still out and a specialist is on the way. Apologies to members of our audience, our business associates and colleagues who are trying to contact us on the phone."
More details on their efforts will be published in this space as they are reported.
