Two of winter's best TV shows, FX's Justified and TBS' Cougar Town debut at same time tonight

justified1.jpgIt's a serious predicament, unless you own a digital video recorder or have a mighty fast finger on the remote control.

But it just so happens two of winter's coolest TV shows a debuting at exactly the same time tonight: FX's backwoods lawman drama Justified and TBS' reboot of ABC's under-appreciated sitcom, Cougar Town.

Read the capsule reviews below to decide which gets your live attention and which gets recorded come 10 p.m. tonight

Justified, new season begins at 10 tonight on FX. Timothy Olyphant’s U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens remains a street-smart, supremely confident lawman working the backwoods of his Kentucky hometown, tripped up most by his own mistakes. In this season, his convict father’s connection to an empty diplomatic pouch sparks a jailhouse murder, the theft of Givens’ car (with a fugitive locked in the trunk) and the introduction of whip smart comic Patton Oswalt as a not-so-smart constable, Bob Sweeney.

As usual, there's also a conflict between the bad guys we love -- Walton Goggins' theatrical-yet-crafty drug dealer Boyd Crowder -- and the bad guys we don't, including Jere Burns' Dixie Mafia leader. By the first episode's end tonight, it's obvious: as a show which humanizes Southern stereotypes while exploiting and exploding them, Justified has no equal.

cougartown.jpgCougar Town, debuts on TBS at 10 tonight. TV’s favorite wine-swilling, super-shallow middle-aged buddies have returned, saved from ABC’s cancellation scrap heap by the good folks at TBS. By now, this sitcom’s name is a serious misnomer, featuring Courteney Cox’s energetic real estate agent Jules Cobb in a new marriage with a man her own age in the fictional town of Gulf Haven, Fla. But forget any semblance of plot; this show is mostly about middle-aged buddies hanging out and cracking increasingly cruel jokes about each other while drinking a staggering amount of wine. It’s like being at both the coolest and stupidest dinner party ever.
