U.S. Open delay Monday screws up start of daytime TV war between Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz, Anderson and Ellen

drphil.jpgIf things seem a bit confused in daytime TV Monday, blame two things: Oprah and the U.S. Open.

Monday was already scheduled to be a tumultuous occasion; the first day of a new TV season without Oprah Winfrey’s blockbuster syndicated talk show. And as a host of competing shows gear up to try snagging some of her fan base, CBS rescheduled some of its U.S. Open coverage to Monday, disrupting things further.

Locally, that means Dr. Phil’s big interview with the parents of accused-and-acquitted Orlando-area child murderer Casey Anthony has been pushed back to 4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday on local CBS affiliate, WTSP-Ch. 10. On Monday, CBS will air the men’s U.S. Open final from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., followed by a delayed half-hour of local news.

anderson-cooper-daytime-talk-show.jpgAt 9 a.m. Monday on rival WFTS-Ch. 28, CNN anchor Anderson Cooper unveils his new daytime talk show with blockbuster guests: The parents and boyfriend of singer Amy Winehouse, who was found dead in her London home at age 27 back in July. The station is also promoting heavily the return of Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show at 4 p.m. – Oprah’s old timeslot locally – with an interview featuring new Two and a Half Men star Ashton Kutcher.

Fox station WTVT-Ch. 13 welcomes the Wendy Williams show at 11 a.m., rescued from an overnight timeslot on another station, while WTTA-Ch. 38 presents scandal-chasing lawyer Gloria Allred in yet another courtroom show, We the People, at 2 p.m.

And one of Winfrey’s protégé’s gets her old timeslot; Dr. Oz moves from WFTS to WFLA-Ch. 8 at 4 p.m., coming back with a season-long, $1-million health challenge giveaway.

Let the battle for Oprah acolytes begin.
