Wait Wait Don't Tell Me in Tampa: NPR's news satire comes to Ground Zero for weird news

21

November

waitwait.jpgHost Peter Sagal said it was like going to Mecca -- if you're somebody who makes fun of the news for a living.

But Thursday's visit by NPR's popular news quiz Wait Wait Don't Tell Me to Tampa was much more than a field trip to a state where a zombie attacked a guard in a  scuffle at nudist resort's Halloween party.

("Worst costume party ever," quipped panelist Adam Felber on the prospect of seeing a nudist dressed like a decaying corpse.)

It was also a chance for Tampa-area fans to show some love for the increasingly popular radio comedy.

wwdtmcast_092606.jpgThe last time Wait Wait was in these parts -- a Sarasota stop back in 2006 -- there didn't seem to be nearly as much love for the quirky, borderline geeky news quiz contest. But, powered by sidesplitting visits from superstar guests such as Kevin Bacon, Tom Hanks and Bill Clinton, the show has become a favorite for the NPR set -- selling out the Straz Center not long after the Tampa stop was announced.

Just before the Tampa stop, NPR announced the show will film a version for TV, recording its year-end extravaganza for BBC America (my only snark: they couldn't find an American TV outlet?)

Superstar comic Bill Cosby was supposed to be the guest last week, but comedian and podcast star Marc Maron was substituted at the last minute, calling in from his homebase in Los Angeles.

Click below to check out the full show, which includes Maron trying to sift real-life outrageous Florida crime stories from made up ones (hint: the item about a transvestite riding a manatee probably sounds a bit too pedestrian for us here in Florida).
