Watch live interview with American idol's Mariah Carey, Nicky Minaj, Keith Urban and Randy Jackson at 8:30 p.m.
If you have read the news stories about how American Idol's new judging panel is surprisingly lucid and focused -- based on new judges Mariah Carey, Nicky Minaj and Keith Urban's press conference with journalists in Los Angeles yesterday -- now is your chance to see for yourself.
American Idol is simulcasting a press conference with the three new judges, joined by old hand Randy Jackson and multitasking host Ryan Seacrest, at 8:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, viewable from this embedded player below.
I've already seen 45 minutes of the new Idol season, which returns to TV next week, and Minaj seems the only spark to make any of it all worth watching.
Given to head-scratching non-sequiters -- she tells Urban at one moment that "I wanted to be a bus driver at one point" -- Minaj also has a good eye for talent, a mercurial habit of lashing out at Carey and an impish tendency to encourage the worst singers to keep performing well past the moment when everyone knows they are going home.
She's the only one in the footage I saw who provides different feedback than we've seen from judges in past Idol tryouts, where stars are often too worried about looking like jerks to be honest with singers.
According to Idol's website: "Seacrest will moderate a nationwide interactive Q&A LIVE with judges Mariah Carey, Randy Jackson, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban. The LIVE and interactive Q&A will appear in satellite venues, as well as stream on various websites, including www.americanidol.com and www.livestream.com, beginning at 8:30 PM ET/5:30 PM PT."
