Watching Alec Baldwin get kicked off an airplane on Twitter is marvel of modern media

If you haven't heard that 30 Rock star and longtime star Alec Baldwin got kicked off an American Airlines flight today -- he says, for playing the online Scrabble game Words With Friends on a mobile device -- then you haven't been on Twitter.

That's because the online messaging system has been buzzing about it since Baldwin tweeted this message:

"Flight attendant on American reamed me out 4 playing WORDS W FRIENDS while we sat at the gate, not moving. #nowonderamericaairisbankrupt

As fans watched his Twitter stream, Baldwin  -- and some other passengers on the floght -- described him leaving the plane and getting on another flight.

Adding to the swirl of social media around this incident, American Airlines has used its Facebook page to respond, saying an unnamed, "extremely vocal customer" refused to turn off his cellphone when the plane's doors were closed and the seat belt sign was turned on, as required by FAA regulations.

"The passenger was extremely rude to the crew, calling them inappropriate names and using offensive language," the statement said. "Given the facts above, the passenger was removed from the flight and denied boarding."

As the actor joked about changing his Words With Friends user name to #theresalwaysunited, fans spread word across the Twitterverse and began reporting the game would not allow any more people to use the name.

Gossip website TMZ reports some others on the plane say Baldwin was kicked off the plane when he slammed the lavatory door; "sources close to Alec" say he got out of his seat to get the flight attendant's name and because the seat belt sign was on, he got booted.

Later tweets from Baldwin:

-- But, oddly, 30 Rock plays inflight on American. #theresalwaysunited

-- United Airlines should buy Words With Friends.

-- Now on the 3 o'clock American flight. The flight attendants already look.....smarter.

-- #theresalwaysunited Last flight w American. Where retired Catholic school gym teachers from the 1950's find jobs as flight attendants.

-- Now, as I was kicked off this flight, the word I was playing was UNITED

30-rock-baldwin.jpgHere's a Storify array of tweets on the subject.

Former MSNBC anchor and Current TV host David Shuster tweeted: @alecbaldwin The 45 minutes you cost all of those AA passengers... they will never get it back. 1) Apologize 2) get some therapy, man.

The wife of former New York Times editor Bill Keller, @EmmaGKeller, weighed in with this: My entire twitter feed consists of weird stories about @AlecBaldwin playing some game on a flight. Give me the 140. What happened?

And Baldwin added to the fun by tweeting the picture to the right.

The flight attendants at American Airlines should have known. There is no animal in captivity more dangerous than a celebrity with an ego and an active Twitter account.

I'm betting American Airlines comes up with some way to apologize and suck up before long.
