Weekend funny: Does Modern Family star Sofia Vergara exaggerate her accent?
Back in 2005, I interviewed soon-to-be Modern Family star Sofia Vergara for Hispanic magazine, and we spent some time talking about an important subject:
At that time, I had heard she was working hard to improve her English, on the heels of signing a talent deal with ABC to get her into a successful U.S. TV series.
By then, the Colombian-born beauty was already a showbiz veteran in the world of Spanish-language television, as host of a couple of popular series on the Univision network.
The Hispanic piece went like this: "“This is the first time a Latina actress with a thick accent is going to be in prime time television…I couldn’t let that pass,” says the Colombian-born Vergara – calling by cellphone while driving through New York City -- who has...(joined Hot Properties), ABC’s ensemble comedy about four sexy female Realtors.
But Vergara remains humble regarding her chances of being the first Spanish-language TV star to find wide success on an English-language, mainstream U.S. network.
“(Desperate Housewives star) Eva Longoria speaks perfect English, but me…,” she laughs, a bit self-consciously, while searching for the right English phrase. “I’m opening doors for all the Latina actresses with accents here. And as you can see – it’s a risk for the network.”
Which is why I was surprised to stumble on this piece in Latina magazine, alleging Vergara may be exaggerating her accent to appear more ethnic on ABC's Modern Family.
Given how self-conscious Vergara seemed to be back in 2005 about her English, I'm not buying it.
I do think there's some residual friction over how willing the star has been to conform to typical Latina images and behaviors in her work (a natural blonde, she dyes her hair brunette for many roles).
Latina may also agree; they just published this piece on 10 accents which changed Hollywood, listing her first.
But check out this old commercial from 1998 and a recent Modern Family scene and decide for yourself:
