shay-ryan2.jpgNearly three months after the mysterious firing of morning weather forecaster Stephanie Roberts, Tampa ABC affiliate WFTS-Ch. 28 has named her replacement: Sunshine State-raised University of Florida graduate Shay Ryan.

According to press materials from WFTS, Ryan was raised in Ft. Lauderdale and earned a degree in telecommunications from the University of Florida. Most recently, she worked as a weekend meteorologist for WNYW -TV, the Fox affiliate in New York, also appearing on the Fox News Channel. Before that, she worked in Detroit, Savannah, Ga., and Greenville, Miss.

She replaces Roberts, who was fired with little explanation in early May. Neither Roberts nor the station would say whether her departure was connected to an unpublicized arrest for driving under the influence in October or whether she informed the station when the arrest occurred.

Ryan starts work Aug. 13, according to WFTS. The station's press release is below:

Meteorologist Shay Ryan joins ABC Action News

Shay Ryan is returning to her home state of Florida. She grew up in a suburb of Ft. Lauderdale and received her Bachelor's degree in Telecommunication from the University of Florida. Staying at the Emergency Management Shelter for 36 hours, Shay reported on key safety updates and the tracked the storm's path.

Shay adds her forecasting expertise to the ABC Action Weather Team that includes Denis Phillips, Wayne Shattuck and Bill Logan. ABC Action News currently has the only team of forecasters "Certified Most Accurate" in the United States by an independent research company.

"Shay's weather knowledge, combined with her great television and online skills, make her a perfect fit to forecast our unique weather patterns here in the Bay area and help people get started with their day," said General Manager Rich Pegram.

Other than being a self-proclaimed "weather geek," Shay spends her free time enjoying the outdoors with her two young children and husband as much as possible. She loves the water and every activity on it or in it! She loves to cook, paint and is a home improvement enthusiast. She is excited to be back in Florida, where she was raised, and looks forward to raising her own children here in Bay area.
