Who Wants to Be a Millionaire brings auditions to Tampa on Friday

Millionaire Casting directors seem to have discovered the Tampa Bay area in a big way.

One week before producers from NBC's Biggest Loser come to the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center to turn our couch potatoes into reality TV gold, staffers from the syndicated and network TV versions of Who Wants to be a Millionaire will come to the St. Pete Times Forum, auditioning prospective contestants for both shows.

Auditions start at 7 a.m. and end at 11 a.m. Friday.

Gotta say, I'm surprised this show is still on television. As co-anchor of NBC's powerhouse Today show, you'd think host Meredith Vieira would have better things to do than babysit a syndicated game show; locally, the show serves as a placeholder, filling the 4 p.m. slot after CBS affiliate WTSP-Ch. 10 canceled its 4 p.m. newscast.

Apg_philbin_061103_ssh But ABC is returning the show to prime time in August, bringing back host Regis Philbin for a run of summer shows in the same way that first turned the program into a ratings juggernaut. Auditioners will be eligible for either version of the program.

According to this online site, those auditioning are asked to take a 40-question test and submit to a 30-second interview with a producer. Of course, they're looking for the right blend between personal stories and trivia knowledge -- anywhere from 10 to 15 percent of those who audition are chosen.

The only requirements: you must be over 18 and a U.S. citizen. You can't have played in the "hot seat" of the prime time or syndicated version of the show. And you have to pay your own way to New York City for the show's taping.
