meredithw_logo_3.jpgLocal fans of the syndicated game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire will have a chance to live out their dreams when producers bring tryouts for the show to Tampa July 27.

The auditions, scheduled in a morning and afternoon sessions, will take place at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay (2900 Bayport Drive, Tampa, FL 33607).  Participants must be at least 18 years of age and a resident of the 50 United States or District of Columbia.  Click here for a complete list of rules and eligibility requirements.

The auditions were a surprise to me, mostly because Millionaire does so badly in the ratings for local CBS station WTSP-Ch. 10. During May's "Sweeps" ratings period, Millionaire landed in last place at 4 p.m. And according to a press release from the show, on Sept. 12 Millionaire is moving to 7:30 p.m. on WTSP -- a prime "access" timeslot.

Below are more details about the auditions from the Millionaire press release:

meredith_millionaire_promo.jpgAuditions consist of a timed multiple choice test and for those people who pass, an interview with one of the show’s producers.  Two audition sessions will be held.  The first session will start at 7:00am and will run through 11:00am.  The second session will begin at 4:30pm and will end promptly at 5:30pm.  No pre-registration is required and people may line up for an audition at any time during those sessions.  Auditions will be held in the Audubon Ballroom and the line will form in the foyer area.  No one will be admitted in line prior to 6:00am.

Tampa, FL was one of six cities selected for auditions.  Producers have already visited Harrisburg, PA (July 11), Charlotte, NC (July 13) and Chicago (July 15), and also will hold auditions in Washington, DC (July 25) and Las Vegas, NV (July 29).

Meredith Vieira has hosted “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” since its syndication debut in 2002.  Throughout nine seasons on the show, Vieira has handed out nearly $65-million in winnings to Millionaire contestants.  She has won two Daytime Emmys for her work on Millionaire in the category of “Outstanding Game Show Host” (2005 and 2009).  With her first win in 2005, she became the second woman ever to win in that category.  The first (and only other woman to-date) was Betty White.  Vieira has hosted over 1,500 episodes of “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire,” which makes her the most prolific female game show host in history.
