WTSP-Ch. 10 confirms Dave Wirth will take over as station's lead sports anchor
Tampa Bay area CBS station WTSP-Ch. 10 has confirmed that longtime anchor Dave Wirth (right) will take over as the outlet's lead sports anchor when current evening sports guy Justin Allen leaves the job.
As I reported April 30, Allen decided to leave the station and move back to California with no new job lined up. Wirth is scheduled to take over June 26, working from Wednesday to Sunday.
Following WTSP's decision to cancel Wirth's 4 p.m. newscast, he needed a new position and 20 years' experience as the station's No. 2 sports anchor -- he moved to the 4 p.m. newscast in 2004 -- left him as an ideal replacement.
WTSP, now rebranded as 10 Connects, notes in its press release that weekend anchor Angela Jacobs (left) will also remain at the station. Wirth, Jacobs and Travis Bell are all designated as "multimedia journalists" expected to write, produce, shoot video and cover live events for the Web site and broadcasts.
Sounds like a lot of work. But in this new media environment, who can argue?

May 8, 2009; St. Petersburg, FL: Ken Tonning, President and General Manager of 10 Connects, announced today a re-structuring of the 10 Connects sports department.
Leading the re-vamped department will be veteran broadcaster Dave Wirth. Wirth joined 10 Connects in November, 1984, as the weekend sports anchor. In July, 2004, he became a co-anchor of the station 4:00pm newscast. He returns to his sports role in June.
Joining Wirth in the sports department will be Angela Jacobs, who has been with the station since July, 2003, and Travis Bell, who joined the station in 2006. All three will be multi-media journalists. Each will shoot video, edit stories for on-air and on-line, report from the field and anchor sport segments in 10 Connects newscasts.
“We are excited about this sports team” said Tonning making the announcement. “They bring tremendous passion, experience and versatility to the job. We believe they give us a strong advantage as we work to cover local sports on all levels.”
