David Letterman proves he's a master of the uncomfortable TV moment with Lindsay Lohan interview
David Letterman once again proved why he’s a master of high-profile broadcasting moments, delivering a 14-minute interview with troubled star Lindsay Lohan Tuesday night that delved into her coming stint in rehab, asking tough questions through a veneer of uneasy jokes.
His first sharp question, delivered after a few jokes back and forth, was direct yet funny: "Yes or no, do you steal stuff?"
At first, Letterman read jokes to Lohan, interspersed with real questions. “Aren’t you supposed to be in rehab now?” “How will this time be different?” “What are they rehabbing?”
“We didn’t discuss this in the pre-interview,” she said with a slight smile, before talking further about rehab. “I don’t think it’s a bad thing. I think it’s a blessing.”
Letterman also showed a picture from her first appearance on his show, when she was seven years old.
Ever the master of the uncomfortable moment, he even made Lohan a bit teary after complimenting her for coming on his show after the litany of jokes they have told about her. In the end, Lohan delivered a few half-hearted plattitudes about rehab while Letterman made it plain he hopes her most recent stint in recovery actually sticks.
