'Fifty Shades of Grey' is Razzies red with shame
As an awards season reminder that not everything Hollywood does is quality stuff, the Golden Raspberry Awards announced their 36th annual nominations list of the worst in movies.
The S&M romantic (unintentional) comedy Fifty Shades of Grey shared the Razzies nominations lead with six, including worst picture, actress (Dakota Johnson), actor (Jamie Dornan) and screen combo.
In the latter category, Fifty Shades of Grey competes with such offbeat pairings as Johnny Depp and his glued-on mustache in Mortdecai, and Adam Sandler and any pair of shoes in The Cobbler.
Fifty Shades of Grey is tied in overall nominations with three other 2015 lowlights: the space oddity Jupiter Ascending, Sandler's video game flop Pixels and the self-explanatory Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2. Those four tests of moviegoer endurance are joined by a rebooted Fantastic Four in the worst picture race.
Other notable nominations include Depp and Channing Tatum (Jupiter Ascending) for worst actor, last year's Academy Award winners Eddie Redmayne (Jupiter Ascending) and Julianne Moore (Seventh Son) in supporting categories, and Lecanto High School graduate Miles Teller in the worst screen combo category, as a member of Fantastic Four.
Another Tampa Bay product who escaped Razzies attention is Patrick Wilson, although his Home Sweet Hell co-star Katherine Heigl earned a worst actress nomination.
There's also room for back-handed praise on the nominations list. One category is the Razzies redeemer award, presented to a previous "worst" who turned in praiseworthy work. This year's nominees include Golden Globe winner Sylvester Stallone (the all-time Razzies leader with 10 statuettes), Will Smith (Concussion), director M. Night Shyamalan (The Visit) and actor Elizabeth Banks, who directed Pitch Perfect 2.
Razzies are tradionally handed out the night before the Academy Awards, on Feb. 27 this time. Winners (losers?) rarely attend to pick up their prizes but there are good humored exceptions. I attended the 1996 ceremony when director Paul Verhoeven accepted his Razzie for directing Showgirls. A few years later, Halle Berry accepted her worst actress prize for Catwoman and the next night got an Oscar for Monsters Ball. Sandra Bullock (All About Steve) pulled off the double play in 2010 with The Blind Side.
One Razzie recipient who attended and is likely to be a source of conversation at this ceremony is Bill Cosby, who in 1988 showed up for his worst actor award, for Leonard, Part 6.
