Weekend fun: Final Man of Steel trailer reveals why this film reboot might just work
Let’s welcome the weekend with a little fun: The last trailer for Zack Snyder’s epic Superman film, Man of Steel.
Packed with action, these clips more than any I’ve seen make me excited to see a new film treatment for the classic superhero finally hit the screen.
Fanboys were already feeling optimistic. Snyder proved he could bring a comic to the movies which seemed unfilmable in Watchmen, and he was working with the acknowledged king of superhero franchise salvation, Christopher Nolan of the most recent Batman film trilogy.
The Superman story seems recast with an emphasis on the alien part of the narrative, with our hero Clark Kent/Kal-El/Superman tracked down on Earth by the villainous General Zod after being sent here as a baby by his father from the planet Krypton.
Stay with me, non-fanboys. Because folks from Krypton all have Superman’s powers in our solar system with its yellow sun.
This set-up handles a central problem one of my favorite science-fiction writers, David Gerrold, once articulated about Superman. Paraphrasing, he said: Watching a Superman handle regular problems isn’t interesting; you know he’s always going to win. But a regular guy handling a superhuman problem? That’s good drama.
In this case, it looks like we have a Superman handling several superhuman problems.
Which looks plenty exciting, indeed.
