Let's hope 'The Running Man' is wrong about 2017 (w/ video)
Remember when 2015 came along and everyone got really excited about Back to the Future II and its predictions of hoverboards and self-lacing Nikes? Well, it's 2017 now and another '80s movie has its own (much, much darker) depiction of the year to come. This is your reminder that the dystopian Arnold Schwarzenegger action pic The Running Man is set in 2017.
Hat tip to Slate writer Jamelle Bouie for tweeting this still from the movie's intro.
RUNNING MAN takes place in a 2017 that sounds ominously...plausible. pic.twitter.com/rWl6d7iqWc— Jamelle Bouie (@jbouie) January 2, 2017
Here's the full intro to the 1987 movie and its description of 2017, which, if you don't remember, involves a game show (hosted by Richard Dawson!) where convicts fight for their lives like gladiators in an attempt win their freedom.
Sounds pretty crazy, but just remember, Back to the Future was only one year off in predicting that the Cubs would win the World Series, and that sounded really far fetched too.
