The 'Doctor Who' Christmas special will feature Peter Capaldi's 12th Doctor and Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald.

Doctor Who, one of the longest-running sci-fi shows, returns to the big screen this holiday season for its annual Christmas special --- one of the biggest episodes of the year for Who fans.

Following in the footsteps of the "Day of the Doctor" 50th anniversary special, the Christmas special will play in select U.S. theaters December 28 and 29 at 7:30 p.m. local time.

The Christmas special doesn't have a name yet, but will feature 12th Doctor Pete Capaldi along with companion Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman). The show also teases the return of River Song (Alex Kingston) in her first appearance since "The Name of the Doctor" in the 7th season and her first appearance alongside Capaldi's Doctor.

A release from BBC America and Fathom Events also gave us this juicy nugget of things to come:

"It's Christmas Day in the future and the TARDIS is parked on a snowy village street, covered in icicles, awaiting its next adventure. Time traveler River Song meets her husband's new incarnation, in the form of Peter Capaldi, for the first time this Christmas. River Song made her first Doctor Who appearances in 2008 in Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead and has appeared in 15 episodes to date."

The special will also have extras like an interview with Kingston and a 15-minute behind-the-scenes commentary with Capaldi and Who producer Steven Moffat, notorious breaker of hearts. The Christmas special is typically a pivotal episode where fans say goodbye to transitioning Doctors and companions who are moving on (or dying). No word yet if this is goodbye to beloved companion Clara, but Clara will make her final appearance sometime in season 9.

Tickets for the Christmas special go on sale Friday, November 13 at Though we don't yet have a list of participating local theaters, BBC's Sherlock special, The Abominable Bride, will show at Regency 20 in Brandon, Park Place Stadium 16 in Pinellas Park, Citrus Stadium Park 20 in Tampa and Veterans 24 in Tampa in January.
