'Rainbow Quest': Pete Seeger's charmingly offbeat, and brief, TV show
Just finished writing my "appreciation" of hammer-tough folk singer Pete Seeger, in which I tried to stuff the highest of fight-the-power highlights from his 94 melodic years, which ended on Monday. I included gush from longtime friend, mentor and fellow Rock Hall of Famer Bruce Springsteen, who called Seeger, among other things, "your granddad if your granddad can kick your a--." What I DIDN'T mention, however, was Seeger's brief, quirkily delightful foray into television. The Atlantic has a great write-up on Rainbow Quest, the singer's clunky-charming variety special that "was filmed in black and white, in a New Jersey studio with no audience, and broadcast over a Spanish-language UHF station." Read the story and watch the below video. At the very least, you'll witness Seeger's easy-going infectious ways, an approachability that made him icon.
