'Stranger Things' party, Kanye night coming to Tampa Bay bars
A Stranger Things party is coming to St. Petersburg bar The Bends on Sept. 16 when the whole place gets transformed into "small town Indiana in 1983," according to the event's Facebook page. If you're not familiar with Stranger Things, the Netflix hit that pays tribute to Spielbergian '80s sci-fi, you need to get on that.
DJs will be playing a mix of 80s new wave and synth to help people "get lost in the darkness of the Upside Down" and the bar will be handing out masks of the characters (including the monster, they say, though recreating that massive teeth/face hole sounds challenging). They're also planning to project the whole series on the back wall, and The Bends will be playing '80s movies in the front bar area.
Since they're encouraging people to come dressed in costume for a chance at winning a bar tab, I'll go ahead and throw out a few must-have props:
- -Box of Eggos (preferably frozen)
- -String of Christmas lights
- -Blonde wig (
- -These (freaking perfect) Barb glasses
- -A tattoo in that cool red title font (this is The Bends after all). You can generate one here.
The Bends is better known for its recurring Drake Nights, the last of which had the bar completely packed last month with people holding creepy Drake masks.
Speaking of pop culture cosplay, bars and famous hip hop figures, First Chance Last Chance in Ybor City is getting ready to host its own theme night called YeezyTaught Me on Sept. 13, a night before Kanye West's Saint Pablo Tour makes a stop at Tampa's Amalie Arena.
The bar says it's a night to "celebrate the genius and ego" of West, and you can expect to hear a lot of Ye's music. Depending on how many people miss the old Kanye (chop up the soul Kanye) you might see a few pink polos, and perhaps a rare shutter shade sighting since the bar is asking people to come dressed as their favorite Kanye.
