Not playing at a theater near you: an award-winning film produced by Tampa resident Dr. A.K. Pillai.

Pillai recently won an Indian National Film Award for Valiya Chirakulla Pakshikal (Birds with large wings), in the "environment conservation/preservation" category. The documentary chronicles the lives of villagers in Kasargod, Kerala, suffering health issues resulting from the usage of endosulfan pesticide on cashew plantations for nearly three decades.

The award was presented by Indian President Pranab Mukherjee at a May 3 ceremony in Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

Valiya Chirakulla Pakshikal previously won a World Humanitarian Award in Jakarta and was screened at a United Nations program on environmental issues.
