'The Office' actress Ellie Kemper getting new Tina Fey-created NBC sitcom
Erin from The Office is headed back to television, except this time she'll be coming from somewhere even stranger than Scranton. Ellie Kemper will star in a new sitcom written and produced by 30 Rock team Tina Fey and Robert Carlock on NBC. No, NBC isn't the strange place.
Kemper will play a woman who “escapes from a doomsday cult and starts life over in New York City," Entertainment Weekly reports. The show is moving straight to series, without a pilot, so the network either has a lot of confidence in the product, or Tina Fey's agents are just that good.
“Tina and Robert, who cemented their partnership on 30 Rock, have created a new signature comedy for us that is audacious, emotional, and clever,” NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt said. “While tapping into very relatable themes, there isn’t anything like this anywhere else on television. NBC has been their home for many years and we’re so happy that they’ve found another way to push the comedy envelope for us.”
NBC President Jennifer Salke noted Kemper is making the move from supporting player to leading actres, but Salke thinks the team of Kemper, Fey and Carlock "puts the whole package together." Considering the best new sitcoms the peacock had to offer this season were Welcome to the Family, The Michael J. Fox Show and Sean Saves the World, well, we just can't put too much stock in their opinion.
