Tinder x Spotify deal means new pressure to pick the best 'anthem' for your profile
Dating app Tinder has teamed with music streaming app Spotify to create a new way for potential dates to judge your swipeworthiness.
Tinder now allows users to add an "anthem," a song that can be played through the app when people view your profile, thus creating new pressure to choose a songe that will increase the chances of convincing a stranger to meet in a Starbucks for awkward small talk. Users can also add some of their "top artists" to their profile.
Will this be helpful to daters? Well, studies have suggested that you can tell some things about a person based on what music they like. Psychology Today, citing a study from the U.K., reported that people who listen to hip hop and dance music have more sex, but are also more likely to have committed a crime or tried illegal drugs, while a different study suggested metalheads are "gentle" and at ease with themselves.
IFLScience!, citing yet another study, writes that people who are classified as "empathizers," those with deep concern for other people's thoughts and well-being, prefer sad music with emotional depth in genres such as R&B, soft rock and singer-songwriter.
In the end, though, just try to pick something that makes you look cool, not like a psycho, and isn't super pretentious. Here are some of the best songs to use as your Tinder anthem (and the worst).
SWIPE LEFT SONGS
Kim by Eminem (a tiny bit of a red flag)
We Built This City by Starship (objectively the worst song ever made)
I Just Had Sex by The Lonely Island, feat. Akon (maybe they're being ironic, but still)
SWIPE RIGHT SONGS
I Love You, Honeybear by Father John Misty (so many romantic possibilities)
Should I Stay or Should I Go by The Clash (relevant to when you actually meet and they don't look like their profile pic)
You've Lost That Loving Feeling by The Righteous Brothers (everyone likes to sing along to this)
REALLY DEPENDS ON THE DAY
Birthday Sex by Jeremih
Tired of Sex by Weezer
I Wanna Sex You Up by Color Me Badd
